Chemung County Department of Aging Director Beth Stranges cordially invites you to attend and cover the following event:
WHAT: Older Americans Month Celebration
WHEN: Tuesday, May 9, 2023
TIME: 2:00 pm
WHERE: New Beginnings United Methodist Church, 300 East Miller St., Elmira, NY
The Chemung County Department of Aging and Long Term Care will celebrate Older Americans Month by presenting the 2023 Distinguished Volunteers of the Year Awards and with the reading of a proclamation by Chemung County Executive Christopher Moss designating May as Older Americans Month in Chemung County.
The Distinguished Volunteer of the Year Awards will be presented to six county residents who are 60 or older for ongoing devotion of time and talent to impact others without pay or compensation significantly. This year, we are joining forces with Cornell Cooperative Extension to recognize and celebrate all Chemung Volunteer Action Corp (CVAC) members' volunteer contributions.
Older Americans Month was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. Historically, Older Americans Month, which was called Senior Citizens Month until 1980 when President Jimmy Carter officially changed the name, has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. The theme for 2023 Older Americans Month is “Aging Unbound," which encourages older adults and their communities to:
- Connect with friends, family, and services that support participation.
- Create by engaging in activities that promote learning, health, and personal enrichment.
- Contribute time, talent, and life experience to benefit others.
Age-Friendly Chemung is a community that encourages active and healthy living! By engaging and supporting our community members, we recognize that older adults in Chemung County and across our state and nation play a vital role in the vitality of our neighborhoods, networks, and lives. Older persons are actively involved through civic engagement and volunteerism.
