Tenant-Specific Information
As tenants of eligible rental units, you have an important role in the Lead Rental Registry. As this program moves forward, occupants must:
- Provide access for a lead inspection: A qualified inspector will need access to your living space to look for peeling and chipping paint. They will also assess outdoor paint and soil conditions.
- Provide access for repairs: If lead hazards are identified, your property owner, or another EPA certified contractor, will need access to your home to correct the hazardous conditions.
- Provide access for follow-up inspections: When repairs are complete, a qualified inspector will need to reinspect the unit to ensure all paint and soil hazards are fixed. Then, the inspector will collect lead dust wipe samples. These are taken to ensure that the lead dust levels in the home are safe.

- What does a lead hazard inspection include?
-
A lead inspection includes a visual assessment of peeling and chipping paint. Inside and outside surfaces will be assessed. Qualified inspectors will look for bare soil outside, which can contain lead. Any hazards will need to be repaired in a lead-safe manner by certified contractors.
- I don’t have children. Does my apartment still need to be inspected?
-
Yes, because children may occupy the apartment in the future.
- I see chipping paint in my apartment. What should I do?
-
First, tell your landlord. Ask if they have registered the property and scheduled the necessary lead inspection. If they have not, encourage them to do so or you can call the Chemung County Health Department at 607-873-1308 to schedule a lead inspection.
- How else can I protect my family from lead?
-
- Test your child for lead at ages 1 and 2, and anytime testing is recommended by a health care provider.
- Keep children away from peeling and chipping paint
- Clean regularly using wet cleaning methods, such as mopping and wiping surfaces.
- Wash hands frequently throughout the day to remove lead dust, especially before eating or drinking.
- Eat nutritious foods that contain calcium, iron, and Vitamin C
