Trail Connector Study

Chemung Canal Connector Trail Project

The Chemung Canal Connector Trail Project is a proposed 8-mile paved pedestrian and bicycle trail that will connect the existing Lackawanna Rail Trail in the City of Elmira with the Catharine Valley Trail at Huck Finn Road in the Town of Veteran. By eliminating the gap between the Lackawanna Rail Trail and Catharine Valley Trail, the project will create a 29 -mile continuous trail corridor that will enhance tourism and related economic opportunities, as well as improve mobility and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists along the trail route.

A feasibility study for the project was completed in 2023 (link) and identified a preferred route generally following the former Chemung Canal Towpath.  In April 2025, the Elmira Chemung Transportation Council (ECTC)  initiated the preliminary engineering phase for this project to further develop and refine the trail design details, and to complete federal and state environmental reviews.   The project will be built in phases and the first phase (Lackawanna Rail Trail to I-86) is slated to begin construction in summer 2026.

Open House Scheduled for Tuesday, June 17

The Elmira Chemung Transportation Council (ECTC) will host a public information meeting on the project on  Tuesday, June 17 from 5 to 7 pm at the Village of Elmira Heights, Village Hall, 215 Elmwood Ave, Elmira Heights.
