While now a nature preserve owned and operated by the Waterman center, the Island was originally home to a hotel and restaurant. The hotels owner (Old Joe), fabricated a legend about Hiawatha and the supposed Native American peace treaty that was signed here, but no evidence has ever been found to support that. Regardless, Hiawatha Island is an important piece of history for the region and a cool stop to make on your hiking journey.*Note: Address is for building across from the island. As no bridge exists to the Island a Kayak or Boat will be needed to access the trail.
