Most of what is now Potato Hill State Forest was acquired between 1938 and 1940 to help reduce erosion and improve recreation opportunities. The name Potato  Hill comes from when the land used to be pasture and farmland, where the primary crop grown was, you guessed it, potatoes. The Forest offers 2 miles of hiking trails courtesy of the finger lakes trail, but hiking is also allowed off trail unless otherwise marked.
